What do we believe

'We in Sandyhills Parish Church aim to serve God by being a loving, caring, sharing church reaching
out to the people of our community with the good news of Jesus Christ.'

Wednesday morning service

During the months of September to June, our church is open from 10am until 12 noon for a time of quietness and reflection.   During this time, anyone is welcome to sit in the church and pray, or think, or read the Bible.   From 11am till approx 11:15am, there is a short time of sharing and reflection, led by one of our members.   This usually takes the form of a hymn, a prayer, a reading and a few thoughts.   These have been a great blessing to many people in the midst of the week, so why not consider coming along if you are available.

Christian Doctrine

Part of our aim as a midweek fellowship group is to come to a deeper, fuller understanding of the core beliefs (or doctrines) of the Christian faith as found in the Bible.   We do this by studyong and discussing passages found in the Bible, and considering other documents which seek to present Christian doctrine in a helpful way.   The Church of Scotland holds the 'Westminster Confession of Faith' (see below) to be an accurate presentation of the faith we believe, and as such we are working our way through that document in stages.

The Westminster Confession of Faith is a reformed confession of faith, in the Calvinist theological tradition.   Although drawn up by the 1646 Westminster Assembly, largely of the Church of England, it became and remains the 'subordinate standard' of doctrine in the Church of Scotland, and has been influential within Presbyterian churches worldwide.

In 1643, the English Parliament called upon "learned, godly and judicious Divines", to meet at Westminster Abbey in order to provide advice on issues of worship, doctrine, government and discipline of the Church of England.   Their meetings, over a period of five years, produced the confession of faith, as well as a Larger Catechism and a Shorter Catechism.   For more than three centuries, various churches around the world have adopted the confession and the catechisms as their standards of doctrine, subordinate to the Bible.
